Brief Milestone History of Islamic Economics Study Program Universitas Airlangga
Introduction Stage (1998 – 1999)
The Dean of the Faculty of Economics at that time, Prof. Suroso Imam Zadjuli (1994 – 2001) in 1998 began to initiate to introduce about Islamic economics to the academic community of Faculty of Economics (FE) Universitas Airlangga (Unair). Initiation to introduce Islamic economics in the academic environment of FE Unair has been acted by providing sharia bank services by opening the Cash Office of Bank Muamalat Indonesia located at ABC Building (Academic Business Center) 2nd floor to provide sharia banking services to FE Unair academic community. The next step of initiation conducted by Prof. Suroso Imam Zadjuli is by organizing training on Islamic Economics for faculty lecturer FE Unair. The training held in 1999 by bringing Dr. Thaha El Tayeb Ahmad, Head of Islamic Banking Studies, Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance; Syafii Antonio from Tazkia Institute. The training aims to introduce the basic concepts of Islamic Economics and Islamic Finance to the lecturers of FE Unair.
Preparation Stage (2000 – 2005)
As a follow up of the previous training result in 1999, and as a manifestation of the spirit to build the Islamic Economics Program in FE Unair, then in the year 2000, still during the leadership of the Dean of FE Unair namely Prof. Suroso Imam Zadjuli, formed Center for Development and Assessment of Islamic Economy FE Unair, where one of the goals set up the institution is as a preparation for the establishment of interest in the study of Islamic Economics as well as a means of socialization of Islamic economics in FE Unair. So in 2002 the initiation began to form interest of Islamic Economics in Doctorate Program. In 2005, based on Rector’s Decree No. 8445 / J03 / PP / 2005, officially formed Interest of Islamic Economics in Doctorate Program, Postgraduate Economics Study Program.
Establishment Stage (2006 – 2010)
In 2006, the Dean of FE Unair at that time was Drs. Ec. Karjadi Mintaroem, MS (2001 – 2010) continued the preparation process that been done by the previous dean, then as the first step of establishing the UNDERGRADUATE Islamic Economics Study Program to form the task force to arrange the interest program of Islamic Economics Study in Economic Development Program (EP). Finally in 2006 Interest of Islamic Economic Studies in Prodi EP has been formed based on Universitas Airlangga Rector Decree No. 6966 / J03 / PP / 2006, dated 25 September 2006. At that time the number of students of Islamic Economic Studies interest amounted to 22 people from the management, accounting and development economics. This number consists of 20 people from the 2006 class, and 2 from the 2005 class. There are five subjects has taught in the interest of Islamic Economic Studies at that time namely; Islamic Economics 1 and 2, Seminar on Islamic Economics, Sharia Financial Institutions, and Thesis. Coordinator of Interest Studies at the time is Drs. Ec. Suherman Rosyidi, M.Com.
In 2007, based on Rector’s Decree No. 9935 / J03 / HK / 2007 dated October 22 2007, the Department of Sharia Economy was established as the fourth department in FE Unair. The first Chairman of the Department of Islamic Economics is Dr. Sri Kusreni, SE, M.Si, with Secretary of Department Habiburrahman, SE, M.Si, Ak. A year after the establishment of the Department of Sharia Economics, then in 2008 based on Rector’s Decree No. 4311 / J03 / OT / 2008 dated March 10, 2008 was formally established the Islamic Economics Undergraduate Study Program which at once merged with the Interest Program of Islamic Economic Studies to the Undergraduate Program of Islamic Economics. At the beginning of its establishment based on the decree was called Sharia Economics Undergraduate Study Program, but based on certain considerations and as differentiator with similar study program residing in Islamic Higher Education, then based on Rector Decree No. 72 / H3 / KR / 2011, dated January 31, 2011 changed its name to Undergraduate Program of Islamic Economics until now. The First Head of Islamic Economics Undergraduate Program at the time was Mr. Habiburrahman, SE, M. Si, Ak who also served as Secretary of the Department.
In the year 2008, also based on the same Rector’s Decree no. 4311 / J03 / OT / 2008 dated March 10, 2008 was also established the Doctoral Program of Islamic Economics at Postgraduate Program a. k. a Graduate School (Sekolah Pascasarjana), Universitas Airlangga, with the first Chairman Doctoral Program of Islamic Economics is Prof. Suroso Imam Zadjuli, and managed by Postgraduate Program a. k. a Graduate School (Sekolah Pascasarjana) Universitas Airlangga.
In 2007 for the teaching preparation, some lecturers were sent to International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) to attend a short course on Islamic economics and finance. In November 2008, an Islamic economic curriculum workshop was held as cooperation with International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and continued with TOT of Islamic Finance in 2009 as cooperation with INCIEF Malaysia.
In academic year 2007/2008 up to academic year 2009/2010, admission of Undergraduate Program of Islamic Economics Students still use path of acceptance by Local University Entrance Exams (Jalur Mandiri). The new path admissions through National University Entrance Exams (SNMPTN) was implemented in academic year 2010/2011.
In 2010 based on Rector Decree no. 94 / H3 / KR / 2010, Master Program of Islamic Economics which complement the existence of Undergraduate and Doctorate Program that has been established previously. At the beginning of the foundation of Islamic Economics’ Master Program is undergo by Department of Islamic Economics FE Unair, but based on Rector’s Decree no. 1947 / H3 / KR / 2011 dated November 4, 2011 on the Study Programs Scope in the Monodisciplinary, Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Categories for the Management of Master and Doctoral Programs, the Master Program of Islamic Economics together with the Doctorate Program of Islamic Economic Studies Program is set under by Graduate School of Universitas Airlangga, although teaching resources come from the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga.
